The Dragonfly

Poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson from, ``The Two Voices''

Today I saw the dragonfly
Come from the wells where he did lie.
An inner impulse rent the veil
Of his old husk: from head to tail
Came out clear plates of sapphire mail.
He dried his wings: like gauze they grew;
Thro' crofts and pastures wet with dew
A living flash of light he flew.

Indigenous cultures often perceive the dragonfly as a whirlwind of swift creative action and are an important insect in Zuni legend, where they are shamanistic creatures with supernatural powers. Dragonflies are also directly connected with water and springtime, fertility, renewal and are considered messengers or ancestors to the Mayan Indians of Mesoamerica. In modern times the Dragonfly also symbolizes the dreamtime illusion, and its transformative reality.
