The Didge and its Role in Sound Therapy

Let us keep in mind that there are many levels to look at anything. For most people, all you have to do is hear the sound of the didge to feel relaxed, and for some this is therapy enough. Already there has been research done by both scientists and healers alike that suggest the therapeutic effects of sound vibration. In Jonathan Goldman’s book, “Healing Sounds,” he describes sound as having the capacity to affect us on all levels - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. New Swiss research has found that playing the didge can help reduce snoring and the day time sleepiness associated with the syndrome known as obstructive sleep apnea.

The didgeridoo or “didge” being used in sound therapy is a bit controversial right now. All across America and abroad people have been using the instrument to perform didge healings, massages and “sound baths” to all those willing and open to the experience. Most of the controversy comes from people making claims without having proof of the experience, or rather an explanation of how it works.

To take an even closer look at how we might experience “healing” from the didge we need to understand first, the power of thought and intention that creates our world around us. Most of us have had either a negative thought that seemed to make things go sour and the day run longer, or a positive thought that perked our entire day up and made things fly by. Today, there are many new age healing circles in the spiritual community where one can go to feel a healing on some level. Often, these events begin with the group stating an intention for that day. Intentions are good because often they set clear boundaries and parameters for the mind to follow when subjected to sometimes vulnerable states that come in times of spiritual crisis and healing. It is my belief that to set an intention is like saying to my self “this is the direction I would consciously like to walk in today.” In this way of thinking I can create and entire day where all I choose to take part in are activities that lift my spirit, or the spirit of others through a process of mental entrainment with the higher potential available to all us.

Spiritual teachers of the world have said for a long time that by changing our attitudes we can change the world. One of my spiritual teachers once told me that as the universal intelligence or God witnesses the patterns of harmony I create in life, I will be given more opportunity’s to create new patterns giving way to whatever I choose to experience. This is to say, we share with each other the lessons of life through our actions and over time our actions produce a positive affect in our life, and in the life of others.

It is important to keep in mind that “healing” is a result. It takes some effort to achieve this kind of result. For example, if your back is hurting from a car accident, and you go see the chiropractor, it’s not fair to yourself or the chiropractor to assume that the pain will mysteriously go away after one or two visits. Just like a chiropractor would have you come in for follow-ups, so should you have follow ups with whatever wholistic path you decide to take. It was brought to my attention recently that didgeridoo therapy is not diagnostic. That is to say, there is no scientific way to tell by playing over the body what may be going on inside the person receiving a didge massage, or even if the didge is the right medicine for their illness. This is why if you choose to use the didge for healing purposes it is wise to ask the recipient for their consent. It is also polite to ask what matters are bothering them so that you may have the best possible idea of how to assist in there healing. Really, part of the healing is this process of listening to the problems of the person. Many times your presence alone can be enough to brighten up some ones day. Obviously, if you have clarity into their health challenges you will be more likely to assist them in some way.

Also, keep in mind that when using the didge for sound therapy, do not assume it will cure a chronic illness. You might run into people who are dealing with a serious illness, and choose to see you before consulting with a physician or their family doctor. If someone is claiming that the didge healing you’ve given them has cured them in any way that’s great!! Just be careful. It’s in your best interest as a wholistic practitioner to protect your self, and your practice, by not diagnosing, or prescribing anything based on their didge experience alone. In cases like this it is wise to recommend the patient see their family doctor for the final word while continuing to visit you for sound baths. It’s a good idea to approach the business of wholistic health care with this kind of mind full attention.

In Jonathan Goldman’s book, “Healing Sounds”, he mentions entrainment as being, “ The ability of the more powerful rhythmic vibrations of one object to change the less powerful rhythmic vibrations of another object and cause them to synchronize their rhythms with the more powerful vibration.” A lot of what we feel after a didge massage has to due with the entrainment that takes place between the rhythm of the didgeridoo and the natural rhythms of the body. In theory a healing could take place if for example, the disharmonious vibration of one object is synchronized with the vibrations of the didgeridoo. There has been some research into the frequencies of certain organs. For example, the liver is believed to emanate 256 cycles per second, or a frequency of 256 hertz. This translates to a C note on the Chromatic Scale of tones. So in theory you could play a didge that has a fundamental C tone over the liver, and in turn cause any disharmony to change through the process of entrainment as described above.

Some people, I understand, document every didge massage they give. This would help you track the progress of a potential client as well as give you some idea of the progress of your own experiences. You know, healing is very individual and it is always good to hear what everyone has to say on this broad subject. There are lots of references materials available on the therapeutic effects of healing and vibration. Research is being done now with our latest technologies to prove the benefits of this kind of energy work. One such technology is the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) machine that charts subtle energy through biofeedback research.

Dragon Fly Rhythms is in the process of charting over 100 volunteers that take part in this cutting edge research using the didge for sound baths and examining the results with state-of-the-art biofeedback technologies. For now we lack sponsorship, or funding to carry on with the countless hours of time it will take to do this in a scientific method, which will involve doctors to chart and credit the results.

**Without a doubt, the author views the didge and him self as a hollow bone of sorts and quotes the following, “As I play I become a channel for energy moving in a circular motion from the unseen world, to the top of my head, down through the didge and into the earth returning back out into the unseen world of subtle energy.”
